Paradise Interwoven: Digital Themes on Classical Panels
Solo Exhibition
March 28-April 10, 2024
Ottawa School of Art, Lee Matasi Gallery
35 George Street, Ottawa, Ontario
“Paradise Interwoven” draws inspiration from the main characters and themes from John Milton's epic poem “Paradise Lost.” This project blends the immediacy of contemporary selfie culture found on dating apps with the enduring craft of classical oil painting on birch panel. It presents a visual conversation that weaves together past and present, tradition and innovation.
The exhibit encourages a nuanced exploration of masculinity, emphasizing resilience and vulnerability, in the face of contemporary complexities, while drawing parallels to the timeless struggles for power and identity. The untraditional square portrait format, reminiscent of dating app profile pics, coexists with the organic texture of oil paint on birch panel, creating a dialogue between the fleeting and the timeless. The subjects, framed within this intersection, embody the eternal dance of masculinity, navigating identity, desire, the need for love, and self-discovery.
In an era of selfie culture and dating apps where curated images often mask the true essence of individuals, these portraits only capture the external façade of the sitter and not the enigma of the person behind the meticulously crafted image. “Would you date me?“ invites viewers to ponder both the subjects' stories and the intentional synthesis of digital and classical mediums. Simply put, would you choose to meet any of the men in these portraits without first knowing their true back story? Would you take the time to read “Paradise Lost” before you made your decision, or are their idealized images and dating profiles enough?
